You may remember Hadji Beys Turkish Delight from the 60s and 70s.
It had been part of Ireland's food tradition since 1902 when a young Armenian named Harutun Batmazian set up his stall at the Great Cork International Exhibition making Turkish Delight.
He quickly established a shop and factory on McCurtain St. which became a famous Cork landmark. Despite its small size, the reputation of Hadji Bey soon expanded beyond Cork and Ireland to some of the great department stores of the world. Harutun strongly believed in the integrity of his brand through his focus on the superior quality of his product.
We sold many tins of Hadji Beys in McCambridge's, particularly during Christmas. It was sold in distinct tins, and if you have a family hoarder, there may be still a tin or two about.
The Batmazians finally stopped producing the Hadji Bey et Cie Turkish Delight in the mid 1970's when Eddie Batmazian retired.
Hadji Beys has now been re-launched, with the same commitment to superior quality, by Urney Chocolates. We have it in stock, original rose and mixed at 8.50 euro each.
I think its very good, and I am told by those who remember(or think they do!) that the taste is excellent, and that the texture is a little bit harder than the original.
